ENGLISH:

First of all I must thank you for sharing part of your time for this interview.
Thank you for inviting me! :-)

I must also tell you that Night School has been a nice surprise for me. I thought at first I was in front of a good paranormal-romance with bits of thriller novel and it's way more than that. It grabs you from the first page to make you enter into a turmoil of lies and mysteries hidden behind Cimmeria's walls
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it.

I know it all came from the fact that you took it as a challenge. What were you thinking when the plot began to take shape in your mind?
At first, I wanted to write a vampire book. I'd read the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, and I had an idea to write a series about vampires in a British boarding school. The only person at the school who wasn't going to be a vampire was Allie. But as I wrote it, I found it just didn't feel right to me. So gradually it changed from paranormal to something more real.

We girls always like bad boys, first because of the erotica of a dark side and second because actually they turn out not so bad as they seem at first sight. In this novel we have two wonderful characters who will invite the readers to fall in love with them. Any personal preference between them?
I have to say -- and this is controversial among my friends -- that I have a soft spot for Sylvain. I know he does a very bad thing the night of the ball, but I'm sympathetic to him. He is only 16, and at that age we are all a product of our upbringing. Spoiled children behave in a spoiled way until they learn that this is wrong. He is punished for his bad behaviour, and he's very sorry. I also think he really cares for Allie, but doesn't know how to show it.

I am of the opinion that every character and story share something with their authors. Wich one do you identify more with?
Rachel. Without question. Her voice is very similar to my voice. Her humour is very much my humour. I find her the easiest to write.

Cimmeria is a wonderful place. Did you take some kind of refference from any buildings or places.
My sister-in-law attended a boarding school near the town where I live. It's called Frensham Heights. And it was a visit to that school that first started me thinking about writing a book set at a boarding school. My descriptions of Cimmeria are quite similar, but not identical, to Frensham Heights.

The story told on the murals from the library makes me wonder. Will it have some relevance on the second part.
The Latin slogan above the door is probably the most significant thing in the church... ;-)

I know you worked as a reporter for newspapers and that partly the experience served to shape this novel full of mysteries. Could the phrase “based on a true story” apply to this novel?
I fear not! The story and characters are completely fictional. However, it is true that the vast majority of television and media executives, as well as politicians, in the UK attended the same handful of private schools. In the UK, 7% of the population attends private school, compared to 80% of Parliament. So it is not completely unfair to say that a relatively small circle of elite, wealthy families run this country, control its newspapers, and oversee it's broadcast journalism.
Therefore, the concept that an elite group of wealthy and powerful people might believe that they are above the law doesn't seem completely crazy to me.
I wrote the book in 2009, so the economic situation that started in 2008 does play into the series. The idea that a family might be wealthier than the nation they live in is, I think, fascinating. Imagine being wealthier than the Spanish government. What would that be like? Would laws apply to you any more? Would you begin to think that you were different than other people? And if you thought that... What might you do?

As a writer, the thing that caughts my attention is the way we lose ourselves in the plot as it evolves while we read more, maintaining the tension without revealing any clue to foresee the ending. How do you make the main plot fit with all the sub-plots while the whole novel holds together?
I write very organically. Which is to say, I don't outline my book in advance. I have a six-page synopsis of what needs to happen in the book. Then I just sit down and write. The subplots build themselves as I go. Allie is 16, so I am quite determined that -- no matter what -- she has classes to go to, and teachers who are stern with her, boyfriends to deal with and friends to hang out with. So even when everything is sort of imploding around her, she still has to go to history class the next morning, and she still has a literature paper due by Monday. So the mix of those ordinary things she must do, along with the extraordinary things that happen to her, creates a kind of staccato rhythm to the plot. It layers main plot with subplot. Then all I have to do is not lose sight of any of the subplots!

The classic question...I you were on a desert island ( but with electricity, of course). Which book, movie and object will you carry?
Book: The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald -- Because I have always loved it, so it would remind me to keep focused on building a boat and getting back home.
Movie: It's a Wonderful Life -- Because it would remind me of family.
Object: A flashlight -- Because I'm scared of the dark.

Night school will soon have a sequel. Which title will it have and what can you tell us about the things the main character and her friends will have to face?
I'm very excited about Book 2! I'm working on the second draft now, so it's NEARLY ready. :-) It will be called Night School: Legacy. In this book, Allie will finally learn the truth about who she really is, and who her parents really are. She'll learn who Lucinda and Nathaniel are. She'll finally know why Nathaniel is after her. And she will see Night School from the inside.

I guess someone must have asked you this before, but is there any plans to turn the book into a movie? it's very visual!.
As they say in America: From your lips to God's ears. :-) There are no plans yet! But if enough people like the book... you never know. I would LOVE for it to be made into a film or TV series. It would be amazing to see what a good director could do with it.

Thank you very much for answering the questions, I strongly recommend Night school as a must read for the lovers of good novels, with agile rythm, charismatic characters and great doses of thriller.
Thank you, Lucia! Any time you have more questions, just let me know.

All the best,

CJ

SPANISH:

Después me siento y escribo.

Como dicen en Estados Unidos: From your lips to God's ears.

¡Gracias a ti, Lucía!
CJ
