1. In the last few years, filmmakers noticed the influence that authors like you have over young people. And in a try to mix of literature and filmaking and it is common to see at theaters or on TV novel adaptations with different luck. We know that “Before I Fall” will turn into a movie, and there’s been speculations about a future adaptation of “Delirium”. What do you think about the process of turning the characters created in your mind into physical characters?

I think it’s great! Look, my work is the book itself. A movie adaptation will be a different piece of art, a riff, an interpretation. So I don’t feel I have to be a control freak about it. At the same time, I have made sure to align myself with really smart, book-centric people, who are interested not just in making the movie but in making it RIGHT.

2. According to Imdb“Delirium” will become a movie in 2013. Is there some truth about this?
Let’s hope so! I know the script is being written now, so we certainly could see a movie in 2013, if all the pieces fall into place.

3. Back to the written paper where you fluently move, I love the way you describe scenarios, characters and the contradicting feelings that sometimes fill them. To me that is primordial in a good description and you’re an artist in that. Do you usually make previous blueprints of a chapter following it to the letter or you let the muses whisper to you as they please?

The muses, sadly, have never whispered structures or plots to me, so I definitely do outline my books, even if I only outline roughly. I need to have a sense of where I’m going or I will flounder endlessly in descriptive passages that have no broader purpose in the book. I have come to believe that the structure of novels is incredibly important.

4. On February 2010 Pandemonium will be released ¿Could you give us some hints or teasers about the novel? ¿What kind of challenges and adversities will have to face our main character and her friends?

I will NOT reveal any spoilers! I can see that the book is told in two alternating time frames, and we see Lena in very different contexts. She has lost everything—the life she knew, the boy she loved—and in order to survive, she has to align herself with a completely different set of people and beliefs.

5. Judging by the answers you gave in interviews some could say you are a pretty self demanding person. ¿Is it difficult for you to write the “the end” on a novel or a written piece?
I’m usually relieved when I come to the end of a book, although there is a sense of loss, too; I’ve lived with these characters and with this story, and have become used to living with them. Fortunately, I’m usually working on more than one book at a time, which means I can dive straight into another project. And yes, I’m very self-demanding. It enables me to be very disciplined and productive, but I am extremely, extremely hard on myself as well.

6. I know Delirium was born after an extrange combination: The reading of García Márquez’s sentence that assures all the great stories deal with love and death and a piece of news you saw about some kind of influenza that threatened with turning into pandemic. You’ve also said that the idea for “Before I fall” comes from the game you had as a kid of recreating in your head a perfect day. To create your characters do you use part of your own wishes, fears and hopes, take people you know as a reference or is there an equilibrium between both?

I think it’s definitely a combination of both. You have to put yourself into your books; it’s the only way of making sure they will resonate, that they will mean something to both you and the reader. But I also draw inspiration from the world around me, from people and behaviors I observe in the real world.

7. If you could carry one movie, (obviously there is electricity XD), one book, one object and one person to a desert island which ones would be your choice?

Okay, I am going to be cheeky, but presuming there is electricity, I would do without the movie and instead bring an e-reader full of books, including Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and Roald Dah’s Matilda. I would also bring my fiancé, who is relatively handy and could probably help construct a life raft with which we would get back to civilization. Unless the island was really pretty, in which case we might stay.

8. What do you think is more difficult about writing a novel: getting the main idea, the beginning, the middle, or the ending?
Oh, DEFINITELY the middle. And by “middle,” I mean everything from page 5 to pages 375…5 pages before the end.

9. Two gossipy questions now ^^ What novel are you reading now? What were you doing before answering this questionaire?

Ha. That’s pretty tame gossip! I’m reading a Canadian mystery by a woman named Louise Penny, as well as the first book in the Game of Thrones series. And before answering these questions, I was napping in a hotel room in Seattle—I’m on tour!
Thanks a lot for answering this interview and most of all for giving us wonderful moments of joy and deep-thinking with your novels, we hope to read you for a long long time.

Thank YOU for your loveliness, and for reading!

ESPAÑOL

¡NO revelaré ningun spoiler!

Y si, me exijo mucho.
